Harbor Herbalist is out of town!

Hi beloved customers!

I am going out of town for a month. I will not be at the Ballard or U-district farmers markets for a month while I head off into the wilderness for wildcrafting, seaweed harvesting, and root digging.

You can still sign up for Bird’s Eye Tea and order on Etsy though! I will be sending out June teas on the 1st of the month.

Sign up for Bird’s Eye Tea by June 1st to receive these incredible blends:

ENVISAGE: Delicate Dao Ren green tea blended carefully with lemongrass, chrysanthemum, orange zest and a touch of stevia leaf. Makes a delicious iced tea if you live in warm climates!

DAYDREAM: The venerable Tulsi woven gently with gorgeous hibiscus, peppermint, cinnamon, fennel, and raspberry leaf.

DREAM: A relaxing evening tea for our enlivened spring souls. Helps quiet the mind and body for a peaceful walk toward slumber.

We are now on Zaarly!

Spring Tonic Blends

glow

I welcome you to SPRING! With longer days and our plant friends waking up after a dark winter we may find ourselves inspired to make a few positive changes ourselves. I get really excited about times of change and enjoy the concept that we can prepare ourselves for what is ahead. Springtime is a perfect period to start new routines that will get your body healthy and toned for the increased energy requirements of summer.

So if you are looking for a great tea blend to detox or just give your liver and kidneys a little extra support during this transition out of winter mode try GLOW tea. Glow is packed full of nutritious roots that support the liver and kidneys. This tea supports the organs that eliminate toxins from the body, which can lift lethargy (or stagnant energy) and encourage happy skin.

Ingredients: Dandelion root, Burdock root, Nettles, Licorice root, and Calendula flowers.

Another option is to subscribe to my monthly tea service called Bird’s Eye Tea and each month I will send you teas that will help get your body into the rhythms of the seasons as they come. I also include information about the herbs in each blend and write small articles about how to live seasonally. Plus inspiring ways we can all make positive health choices.

Bird’s Eye Tea! Sooo Good!

For over six months I have had this awesome subscription tea service that is unmistakably the most delicious and unique service out there for curious herb and tea lovers! Subscribe for yourself, your family, housemates, or friends at www.birdseyetea.com!

Each month I send out three unique blends that I formulate based on a theme or season. As a responsible wildcrafter, ecologist, and herbalist I strive for extreme integrity in all of my herbal products. All the herbs are organic or ethically wild harvested. Any herbs that come from overseas are fair-trade in addition to being organically grown and are tested for purity/quality. Drinking a cup or two of my teas a day can open your heart and mind to the vast expanse of history and cultures that rely on herbs and spices for health and happiness. My online newsletter, that accompanies each delivery, includes detailed information about each tea so you can start to learn the basics of how herbs can help support your body and keep you healthy. I also spend a lot of my time doing active restoration of ecosystems with the intention of increasing diversity and vigor of wild food and medicinal plants. Sharing knowledge about many of these plants is a way for me to help others build a stronger connection to herbs and ecological compassion.

Happy Heart

Everyone goes through heart aches and pains…Stress and loss can have profound effects on the heart, not just the mind. There are several herbs that I have used when my heart feels like it is beating out of my chest, or when I just can’t kick the longing effects of loss. Motherwort, Hawthorn, Linden, and Red Sage are staples in a western herbalist’s handbag, specifically for those who are suffering from psychological heart trauma that leads to rapid heart rate or palpitations. This blend is also effective in cases of nervousness, restlessness, and hypertension. When developing formulas, I try to choose one dominant herb that can be supported by secondary or synergist herbs. I have a personal connection to motherwort and this blend is centered around the heart calming properties and protective energetics of motherwort. Hawthorn, linden, and red sage support arterial blood circulation and are hypotensive. Burdock is often used in clinical practice to support the kidneys and is thought to have blood cleansing properties

Happy Heart is a blend that combines traditional blood purifiers, relaxing heart support, and uplifting aromatics. This tea is designed for long term use. A delicious nourishing blend that calms the physical heart and rebuilds the psychological heart. Energetically this blend can be used by anyone who wishes to confidently open their heart.

Ingredients: Motherwort leaf and flower, Hawthorn leaf and berry, Linden flower, Red Sage, Osmanthus flower, and Peppermint.

Hercules: A Man’s Tea

I have asked my male friends both peer and elder about how they physically and mentally feel and what some of their common health concerns are. And for the most part, men (and women) are plagued by digestive disorders, lack of focus, and occasional bouts of anxiety. Do you wake up by alarm each day, drink several cups of coffee, adhere to complicated schedules, regularly eat out, and drink alcohol daily? In honor of these guys who work hard, play hard, and never get enough sleep I give to you: Hercules: A Man’s Tea. This is a great tea to drink daily. Improves endurance, relieves stress, supports the liver, and replenishes minerals…a tea designed for a bolder more focused Man. I can’t change a persons lifestyle, but I can provide herbal tea’s that help nourish depleted body systems and enhance physical and mental stamina.

Ingredients: Ashwanghanda, Siberian Ginseng, Dandelion root, Gotu Kola, Scullcap, Astragalus, Nettle, Licorice, and a pinch of Spearmint.

MOON FRUIT: feminine cramp and fatigue relief

I have a great daily women’s tonic called Strength, it is a mineral rich uterine support blend of four simple ingredients: raspberry leaf, nettle, spearmint, and rose petals. I would now like to offer a blend that has direct action when you need it most during menstruation. Cramp bark (Viburnum opulus) is an ideal herb for menstrual cramps, it works quickly and effectively to ease painful smooth muscle cramping. Devil’s claw and rose hips both help reduce inflammation. Ginger is a very effective remedy for nausea and fennel reduces bloating and calms the digestive system. Rhodiola helps increase energy and reduce fatigue.  Dong quai is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a menstrual balancer.  The other herbs in the blend are very nourishing and help to sweeten the flavor for a more uplifting cup of tea.

I recommend getting into the habit of drinking the tea two or three days before menstruation, because if you wait til you are in fits of cramps and nausea it may be difficult to get even a single cup of tea down. At least this is my experience with painful menstruation.

Ingredients: Cramp Bark, Devil’s Claw, Ginger, Rhodiola, Dong Quai, Fennel, Astragalus, Cinnamon, Honeybush, Rose

Reishi and Root Daily Women’s Tonic

I recently developed a blend with myself in mind, based on my physical needs. I live in Western Washington, where I spend a lot of time in very old damp buildings or out in the forests. I tend to feel like I have low level immune response to my physical surroundings. My symptoms manifest themselves as subtle headaches around my sinuses, over production of mucus in my nose and throat, persistent sneezing, cloudy thinking, sore muscles, slight fatigue, and mental annoyance targeted toward my body for not allowing me to feel fully vibrant and aware. My symptoms in themselves aren’t serious (I can easily ignore them), but they are constant, and I tend to believe that chronic symptoms have far more detriment to health and longevity than acute problems. I know I am very healthy, but just want a daily tonic to support my immune system and control what seems like constant low level allergies or inflammatory response.

This blend is highlighted by organic Reishi mushrooms, perhaps the most prized of all medicinal mushrooms. Reishi mushrooms are adaptogenic, highly anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory. Reishi down-regulates over active immune system response in cases of allergies or auto-immune disorders, but enhances immune function under normal circumstances. Adaptogenic herbs have given me a lot of relief from stress and anxiety, my favorites are reishi and astragalus. Adaptogens help the body manage stress and improve focus without feeling over stimulated. Dong quai has a strong affinity for the female reproductive system and improves blood circulation. Shatavari is used in Ayurvedic medicine as a building herb that balances female hormones and enhances fertility. Burdock and dandelion roots support the liver and kidneys which can enhance waste removal and improve absorption of nutrients. Rose hips are anti-inflammatory and vitamin rich. Cinnamon and ajwain seeds are anti-microbial and support digestion.

This blend is for women who tend to feel worn down and simply want a daily tonic that supports the immune system and dont mind spending up to an hour decocting the herbs. I enjoy the unique taste of this tea, it will seem exotic or unfamiliar to those who don’t customarily drink root teas.

Ingredients: Reishi mushrooms, Astragalus Root, Dong Quai Root, Shatavari Root, Rose Hips, Burdock Root, Dandelion Root, Ajwain seeds, Orange Peel, and Cinnamon bark.
